When the lighting cable is switched, two-lamp luminaires are used in most cases to save energy, so that one lamp can be switched off alternately during night. As an alternative, one control wire goes to the luminaires which switches magnetic ballasts to reduced-power mode of operation. The same functionality is found where the receiver is used in each luminaire because the operator has decided against a dedicated lighting cable and hence the lighting system is supplied directly from the mains cable. The energy saving concept mostly implemented with this kind of lighting control method is 2/1 lamp operation or reduced power operation with a maximal energy saving of 35%.The restrictions the system entails are major but they can be overcome by using the right approach and with the LiCS outdoor components, the system offers almost the same options to save energy as fully fledged lighting management systems.
